Description
Test details
- CBC with differential: counts red cells, white cells and platelets. Low red cell counts can go along with iron problems.
- Ferritin: shows how much iron your body has stored.
- Iron and TIBC: shows iron in your blood and how well it can be carried.
- TSH and free T4: check thyroid function. Thyroid changes can affect hair.
- Vitamin D (25 hydroxy): checks your vitamin D level.
- Total testosterone and DHEA-S: hormones that act on hair follicles. Providers look at them when thinning follows a pattern or goes along with irregular periods, acne or extra body hair.
- Blood sample, collected in person at our Buffalo Grove or Lake Zurich location.
- For ages 18 and older. The test must be taken by the person who orders it.
How?
- Buy the test online, then visit either location for a short blood draw.
- A morning collection is generally preferred.
How long?
- Turnaround varies by test. Results are typically ready in a few days after the lab receives your sample. Some results take longer.
How to prepare?
- Fasting is generally not required. Follow any instruction given at your visit.
- Stop biotin and hair, skin and nail supplements at least 72 hours before your draw. Biotin can change thyroid and hormone test results. It may also be listed as vitamin B7 or vitamin H.
- If you take thyroid medicine, hormones or other prescriptions, ask your prescriber about timing. Do not stop or change a medicine without asking your prescriber.
Do I need to see a doctor?
- A doctor’s visit is not required to buy this test.
- This test does not diagnose a condition or find the cause of hair loss. A scalp exam by a healthcare provider may be needed for conditions a blood test cannot show. Review your results with your own healthcare provider.
Why consider a hair loss panel?
- You notice more shedding, a wider part or thinning at the temples or crown.
- Hair changes came with tiredness, weight change, feeling cold or heavy periods.
- You want blood markers to bring to a provider or dermatologist.
- You have had a major illness, surgery, childbirth or a diet change in recent months. Hair can shed after these events.

Additional information about the panel
Results are a snapshot of the time of your blood draw. They are shown with reference ranges from the performing laboratory, and normal ranges can differ by age, sex and lab. Hair loss has many causes, including genetics, stress, illness, nutrition, hormones and scalp conditions. A healthcare provider reads your results together with your symptoms and history, and other tests may be needed.
Related tests include the Vitamin B12 Test, Testosterone Test and Menopause Panel.
What does a hair loss panel test?
It checks blood markers that providers commonly review when someone has hair thinning: blood count, iron stores, thyroid function, vitamin D, and testosterone and DHEA-S.
Can a blood test tell me why my hair is thinning?
It can show whether markers such as iron, thyroid or hormones are outside the lab’s reference range. It cannot diagnose the cause by itself, so review results with your healthcare provider.
Does this panel include DHT?
No. This panel includes total testosterone and DHEA-S. Ask your provider whether other tests would help you.
Do I need to fast?
Fasting is generally not required. Follow any instruction given at your visit.
Can biotin affect results?
Yes. Biotin can change thyroid and hormone test results. Stop biotin and hair, skin and nail supplements at least 72 hours before your draw.
How much does a hair loss blood test cost without insurance?
At Vitality Express Labs in Buffalo Grove and Lake Zurich, the Hair Loss Panel is $199.
Is the testing accurate?
Samples are tested in a CLIA certified laboratory that follows quality assurance procedures. No test is perfect, so results are best read together with symptoms and other tests.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
A doctor’s visit is not required to buy this test. Review your results with your own healthcare provider.
