Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): What It Shows and What It Does Not
Quick answer: A comprehensive metabolic panel measures 14 substances in your blood, including blood sugar, electrolytes, kidney markers and liver markers. It gives a broad snapshot of how your body is handling fluids, minerals and organ work.
About this test
The CMP includes glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide, chloride, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, albumin, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, ALT, AST and bilirubin.
Why is it ordered?
- A routine health check.
- Looking at kidney and liver function.
- Checking blood sugar and electrolyte balance.
- Monitoring the effect of certain medicines.
What results may show
- Results outside the range for kidney markers, liver markers, blood sugar or electrolytes that your provider may look into further.
- Signs of dehydration or a fluid or mineral imbalance.
What this test may not show
- It does not diagnose a specific disease.
- It does not show the cause of an abnormal value.
- Normal values do not rule out early or mild organ conditions.
- Fasting, hydration, medicines and supplements can change results.
How to prepare
- Fasting for 8 hours may be requested because glucose is included. Follow the instruction given when you order.
- Water is usually fine. Tell your provider about medicines and supplements.
