Cholesterol (Lipid) Panel: What It Shows and What It Does Not

Quick answer: A lipid panel measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. It is used to look at heart disease risk. The numbers are one part of a larger risk picture.

About this test

The panel reports total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. LDL is often called the bad cholesterol and HDL the good cholesterol.

Why is it ordered?

  • Screening for high cholesterol.
  • Reviewing heart disease risk.
  • Checking the effect of lifestyle changes or cholesterol medicines.

What results may show

  • Cholesterol or triglyceride levels outside the range your provider uses for your risk level.
  • A pattern of higher LDL or triglycerides with lower HDL.

What this test may not show

  • It does not diagnose heart disease.
  • It does not show plaque in your arteries.
  • Recent meals, alcohol, illness, pregnancy and some medicines can change results, especially triglycerides.
  • Your target depends on your age, history and other risk factors, which your provider reviews.

How to prepare

  • You may be asked to fast for 9 to 12 hours. Some people can test without fasting. Follow the instruction given when you order.
  • Tell your provider about medicines and supplements.
