Quantitative hCG Blood Test: What It Shows and What It Does Not

Quick answer: A quantitative hCG blood test measures the exact amount of human chorionic gonadotropin, the pregnancy hormone. It can detect pregnancy early and track how levels change. It does not show where the pregnancy is or whether it is healthy.

About this test

hCG is made by the placenta after an embryo attaches to the uterus. A quantitative test reports a number, while a qualitative test only reports positive or negative.

Why is it ordered?

  • Confirming an early pregnancy.
  • Following hCG levels over repeat tests.
  • Looking at pregnancy symptoms with a negative home test.

What results may show

  • A level above the lab cutoff indicates pregnancy.
  • Repeat tests over days show whether levels are rising as expected.

What this test may not show

  • It does not show where the pregnancy is located.
  • A single number cannot tell you if a pregnancy is healthy.
  • hCG injections used for fertility treatment can cause a positive result.
  • Some rare conditions can raise hCG without pregnancy.

How to prepare

  • No special preparation is needed.
  • Tell your provider if you have had hCG injections or fertility treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative hCG?

Quantitative reports the amount. Qualitative reports whether hCG is present.

How early can a blood test detect pregnancy?

Blood tests can detect hCG earlier than most home urine tests. Your provider can advise on timing.

Can one result tell me everything?

No. Trends over repeat tests and a clinical exam give the full picture. Severe pain or heavy bleeding needs urgent care.
