LH Test: What It Shows and What It Does Not
Quick answer: Luteinizing hormone is made by the pituitary gland. In women a surge triggers ovulation. An LH test is used to look at periods, fertility and menopause. In men it supports testosterone production.
About this test
The test measures LH in your blood. It works together with FSH to control the ovaries and testicles.
Why is it ordered?
- Irregular or missed periods.
- Fertility questions.
- Looking at menopause symptoms.
- Looking at pituitary function or low testosterone in men.
What results may show
- A higher level can go along with menopause, ovarian conditions or polycystic ovary syndrome patterns.
- A lower level can go along with pituitary or hypothalamus problems.
What this test may not show
- LH rises sharply just before ovulation, so timing in the cycle matters.
- A single blood test is not a reliable way to time ovulation.
- It does not show the cause of fertility problems alone.
- Hormone treatment and birth control change results.
How to prepare
- Timing in your cycle may matter. Your provider may ask for a specific day.
- Tell your provider about hormonal medicines.
