Trichomoniasis Test: What It Shows and What It Does Not
Quick answer: A trichomoniasis test looks for the parasite that causes this common sexually transmitted infection. Many people have no symptoms. A urine sample can be used for testing.
About this test
The test detects the genetic material of Trichomonas vaginalis, using a sensitive nucleic acid amplification test.
Why is it ordered?
- Screening in people with new partners or risk factors.
- Symptoms such as discharge, itching or burning with urination.
- A partner who tested positive.
What results may show
- A positive result means the parasite was detected and treatment is needed.
- A negative result means it was not detected in the sample.
What this test may not show
- A very recent exposure may not be detected yet.
- It does not test for other infections.
- Symptoms can have other causes, such as yeast or bacterial vaginosis, that need different tests.
- A positive result needs a provider visit for treatment, and partners need treatment too.
How to prepare
- Avoid urinating for at least 1 hour before giving the sample, if you can.
